Make sure traditional craftsmanship has been used. For example; are the draws wood lined with dovetail joints. This will ensure the drawers last for years to come. A drawer from a piece of reproduction furniture should be quite heavy.

Check that the veneers are thick. Some veneers maybe thin and will not last. You can also look out for veneers that are finished with a heat resistant coating. You may also want to know what is under the veneers. Traditionally veneers would have been laid on a hard wood such as pine. Today good reproduction furniture is made by placing the veneers on high quality furniture MDF. This is much stronger than hard wood and will not warp or move. If you look at antique furniture you will often see cracks in the veneer where the wood beneath has warped.

Selecting the right wood is an art. A good dealer will hand pick their pieces to ensure that the wood used is of the highest quality with a radiant glow.
